Lab on Demand: Scalable Virtual Machines in the browser for students

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

This session covers building a centralized virtual machine sharing platform using Proxmox (hypervisor), LTSP and Apache Guacamole, allowing students to boot into pre-configured VM environments via the web browser. Students don't have to install or configure anything on their own machines. Whether they're on Windows, macOS, or any other OS, they just need to open a browser and log in. The VM they get is already configured with everything the course needs, so they can start working immediately without spending time on setup or troubleshooting their own environment. The platform also includes an admin control center where instructors can monitor active sessions, manage VM assignments, and directly assist students when needed.

Key Takeaways
  • Understanding how Proxmox, LTSP, and Guacamole fit together.

  • How to set up and template VMs for multi-OS lab environments.

  • How to implement browser-based remote access for students with no client-side setup.
How to handle Wake on LAN to power VMs on demand.

  • Networking constraints involved and how to work around them.

  • How to build an admin interface for session monitoring and student assistance.
