Session Description

eSim is an open-source Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tool developed under the FOSSEE Project at IIT Bombay with a vision of enabling an accessible “Simulation to GDS II” workflow using free and open-source technologies. This talk will present the capabilities of eSim in schematic capture, SPICE simulation, PCB design, and HDL-based workflows, along with ongoing efforts toward integration with OpenROAD for open-source ASIC implementation. The session will discuss how the combined ecosystem can support end-to-end chip design education and research, bridging simulation, synthesis, physical design, and layout generation through interoperable open-source tools. The talk will also highlight deployment initiatives, community contributions, and the broader role of open EDA in democratizing semiconductor design for students, educators, researchers, and startups.

Key Takeaways
  • Understanding the role of open-source EDA tools in semiconductor and electronics design

  • Overview of eSim architecture, capabilities, and educational applications

  • Insights into schematic capture, SPICE simulation, PCB design, and HDL workflows using eSim

  • Introduction to the open-source “Simulation to GDS II” vision

  • Understanding the integration possibilities between eSim and OpenROAD

  • Exposure to open-source ASIC design methodologies and toolchains
