Beyond Queries: Engineering Full Neo4j PHP Driver Compliance with Bolt and TestKit

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

Graph databases have become a key component of modern applications powering recommendation engines, fraud detection systems, knowledge graphs, AI assistants, and connected data platforms. Among graph databases, Neo4j has emerged as one of the most widely adopted platforms for managing and querying highly connected data.

However, applications do not communicate with Neo4j directly. Every interaction passes through a database driver responsible for authentication, query execution, routing, transactions, retries, and protocol communication. The reliability of graph applications therefore depends heavily on the quality and correctness of these drivers.

In this session, we begin by exploring the fundamentals of graph databases and how Neo4j models connected data. We then examine the role of the Neo4j PHP Driver and its responsibility as the communication layer between PHP applications and Neo4j.

From there, we dive beneath the API surface to understand the Bolt Protocol, Neo4j's binary communication protocol, and explore how drivers negotiate connections, authenticate users, manage sessions, execute transactions, and communicate with clustered deployments.

The second half of the session focuses on Neo4j TestKit, the framework used to validate driver behavior across languages. Through real-world examples from improving TestKit support in the Neo4j PHP Driver, attendees will learn how protocol-level debugging, compliance testing, and specification-driven development help build reliable production-grade graph infrastructure.

By the end of this talk, participants will understand not only how to use Neo4j drivers, but also what happens internally when applications connect to a graph database and how those interactions are validated across the Neo4j ecosystem.

Key Takeaways
  • Understand when and why graph databases are a better fit for highly connected data problems.
