Open data as a means of preserving durability, integrity and access to research

Review Pending

This talk covers methods and technical concepts to using open data in order to preserve the integrity and durability of datasets and research outputs, and to ensure widespread access to knowledge.

Knowledge, especially that which originates from marginalised communities and individuals, is vulnerable to plagiarism and unethical use. Denying attribution to such work diminishes its value and appropriates the lived experiences it represents, making robust record-keeping practices vital for visibility and recognition. Some methods of publishing, referencing and storage invisibilise the author, in which case open licensing is one method to establish the author’s presence and voice.

No prior knowledge of archiving or record-keeping is required to attend this talk. However, knowledge of open licensing and open data is required in keeping with its short duration.

Some hands-on methods and technical concepts to safeguard datasets and research outputs, enabling transparency and accountability. These benefits both creators and users of the works.
