Most popular platforms today - WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter/X, Tumblr, Reddit, BlueSky, TikTok, YouTube, etc - are not only proprietary, but also centralized in nature, which gives them unfair power over their users.
This power is frequently abused for profit, while also degrading user privacy, promoting hate speech and disinformation, influencing elections, and eroding democracies.
We present some alternatives to centralization, focusing on federation - where independently-run servers talk to each other and form an open network.
We then talk about some prominent federated protocols and services that make up the Fediverse -
XMPP - federated chat and AV calls
Mastodon, Pleroma/Akkoma, and Misskey/Sharkey - federated microblogging (think Twitter)
Lemmy/PieFed/kbin/mbin - federated link aggregators (think Reddit, Hacker News, and Lobste.rs)
PeerTube - federated YouTube
and more - Mobilizon, Friendica, Smithereen, Flohmarkt, Funkwhale, Bookwyrm, PixelFed, Loops, Vidzy...
Finally, we talk about the durare.org community project, which aims to provide India-focused instances of these services.
Note: Other fediverse lightning talk is withdrawn.
As it's more introduction to fediverse, I would prefer this to be a lightning talk.
+1 for lightning talk. The proposal content did not convince me to vote for a full length slot.
While the topic is a good introduction to the Fediverse, it is not suitable for a full-length talk. For future submissions, we recommend that you consider re-framing your proposal as a lightning talk or submit a more detailed proposal.
