Dynamic OGs to Automating Socials - the story of ograph-gen

Rejected

Session Description

Ograph-gen was a small scale application i wrote in 3 hours on my 2nd day as an intern at FOSS United,

The talk goes through a story of how a small program like this, was able to become the backbone of 2 of the latest and pretty important features of FOSS United platform:

  • Opengraph images for events

  • Crossposting and Design generation for events

I also hope this talk serves as a reminder for people on how extensibility still matters in modern software, rather than writing everything to be extremely specific to one task.

Key Takeaways

  • Audience learns about what opengraph is, and why it is so useful to event management platforms like FOSS United

  • Audience learns about the benefits of making simple and extensible software

    • how one software built for something laser focused, like dynamic OG images, can be easily (ab)used with little changes to the code for a whole different usecase (like generating social media posts)

    • its what K.I.S.S and Hacker Culture is all about!

  • Demonstration of FOSSU platform's new features

    • Opengraph Images on popular routes like event, cfp submission, chapter pages and foss profile pages

    • Crossposter and social media post generation (this is a early WIP, but I hope for it to be ready for use by the time IF5 rolls around)

Interesting story. Works as a lightning talk

This is interesting work but I don't feel this is something that we can highlight on a national level stage right now, and I don't know if the WIP crossposter is ready yet. Personally leaning towards rejection but perhaps waitlist for now?

Unfortunately, due to the high volume of excellent proposals this year, we were unable to select your talk for the final program. We appreciate the effort you put into your submission and encourage you to apply again for future events.
