From Aadhaar to AI: Lessons in Building National-Scale Open Source AI Infrastructure

India's Aadhaar system demonstrated how to build massive-scale digital infrastructure serving 1.3+ billion users. As nations race to establish AI sovereignty, what lessons can we extract from Aadhaar's journey to architect open source AI infrastructure at national scale?

This talk examines the strategic, technical, and governance parallels between digital identity and AI infrastructure, proposing a roadmap for India's indigenous AI ecosystem built on FOSS principles.

Key Takeaways for Audience

• Replicable Blueprint: Aadhaar's federated architecture, API-first design, and gradual rollout provide a proven framework for building national AI infrastructure that balances innovation with governance

• Digital Sovereignty Strategy: India can achieve AI independence through mandatory open source models in government, national compute grids, and collaborative language model development - reducing dependence on foreign AI systems

• Privacy-by-Design Framework: Implementing federated learning, algorithmic transparency, and decentralized governance from the start avoids the privacy controversies that plagued Aadhaar's later years

• Economic Opportunity: A well-executed open source AI infrastructure could position India as a global leader in responsible AI development while potentially adding $500B+ to the economy by 2030
