Universal access to mobile connectivity is one of the nine pillars of the digital India program launched by India. This means that mobile operators primarily target the end-user devices, focusing on improving ARPU. There are several government initiatives to promote the use of 5G. The use cases focus on improving end-user connectivity and access to affordable healthcare, quality education, and awareness initiatives. The regulatory authority, TRAI, even promotes digital inclusion and new economic and employment opportunities to contribute to the country's overall economic growth. The operators boast an increase in the use of their annual mobile data consumption but do not analyze the impact it creates on society. This talk presents some effects of this increased consumption and recommends policy measures to promote the use of the 5G ecosystem to improve the economic opportunities for the rural population.
