The Five Operational Pain Points of LLM Integration—and How Agentgateway Solves Them

Proposal status is Review Pending
Session Description

Every team I know that's diving into LLMs and AI agents ends up burning weeks on the exact same five problems:

  1. How do I swap out OpenAI for Anthropic (or any other provider) without rewriting my application logic every single time?

  2. How do I safely expose my internal tools to agents over MCP without accidentally opening a massive security hole?

  3. How do I handle authentication when humans, automated bots, and autonomous agents are all hitting the same endpoints?

  4. How do I stop a single out-of-control agent from torching my entire monthly OpenAI budget in the span of an hour?

  5. How do I get meaningful, real-time visibility into what these agents are doing, request by request?

That's where Agentgateway comes in. It's an open-source (Apache 2.0), AAIF (Agentic AI Foundation) project, under Linux Foundation, written in Rust, and lives in the Solo.io/kgateway orbit—which basically means it borrows a ton of battle-tested ideas from Envoy's data plane.

With v1.3, we finally shipped the Admin UI that everyone kept nagging us about, a cost catalog that tracks actual dollar amounts per request (not just tokens), virtual models that let you do weighted routing and failover, native support for 13 new LLM providers, and much cleaner MCP authorization.

First, I'll give you a quick tour of the core pieces: binds, listeners, routes, backends, and policies. Then we jump straight into eight self-contained demos.
We'll cover: a basic OpenAI/Anthropic gateway, automatic failover between models, an MCP gateway, API-key and JWT auth, CEL-based RBAC for both tools and models, token-based rate limiting with live cost display, and a handful of traffic policies like CORS, timeouts, retries, and mirroring.

Every single demo comes with its own ‘config.yaml’ and a short readme.md file. I genuinely mean it when I say you can copy-paste these and run them on your own laptop while I'm talking or at your home.

Key Takeaways

By the end of this session, you'll be able to deploy a secure, cost-aware gateway in front of your LLM and MCP traffic in about 15 minutes. That means you'll have auth, rate limits, cost tracking, and failover all wired up from the get-go—no more patching things together. Just as important, you'll know exactly which Agentgateway feature to reach for when a new requirement comes up, whether that's adding a new model provider, locking down a new MCP tool, or tweaking traffic policies on the fly. You won't be guessing—you'll know what knob to turn on / off.
