PyTamil is an Open Source Community effort that aims to make Python and programming more accessible to tamil speakers by providing tamil language resources and documentation for python and programming.
The initiative has engaged community members such as community contributors and maintainers Hari (@nammahari), Murugan Santhosh (@terminaljoint) and Madhan Kumar S (@Madcedric) in coordinating, maintaining, reviewing, creating uniformity in technical terminology and assisting new contributors.
While Tamil is one of the oldest languages still in use in the world, programmers and students who prefer to work in Tamil have a huge language barrier when learning programming languages or using technical documentation. PyTamil seeks to fill this void by creating and sustaining a high quality library of Tamil resources for Python, in an open and community-driven manner.
I will talk about the motivation for PyTamil, how the documentation initiative works and how the community is tackling the challenge of translating technical material to Tamil with accuracy, consistency and retaining technical meaning.
This session will present the project architecture and workflow, translation and review procedures, terminology standardization, community coordination, contribution workflows and the importance of FOSS practices for the creation and maintenance of language resources.
I will also showcase the project with examples and explain the various ways to contribute to the project, review translations, improve the documentation, suggest terms, report bugs and expand the Tamil resources in the Python ecosystem.
The aim isn't only to introduce PyTamil, it's also to attract developers, students, teachers, researchers, translators, and developers of FOSS to contribute to making Tamil resources sustainable with open-source software.
The talk will then end with a roadmap of the project and the idea of engaging with the wider community to help increase the accessibility of the knowledge and skills involved in programming and technology for the Tamil community, with the existing coordinators and maintainers.
