Session Description

Industry 5.0 represents a shift toward human-centered innovation, where advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and robotics, collaborate with human intelligence.

Developing an open-source platform that integrates both software and hardware enables the creation of systems that are adaptive, efficient, collaborative, and sustainable.

The major applications of Industry 5.0 span various domains, including 5G-enabled smart factories, AR/VR-assisted operations, Industry 5.0 education labs, IoT-based agriculture, smart city development, climate-adaptive farming, demand forecasting, digital twins, energy optimization and the deployment of ethical AI.

To support these advancements, several open-source tools can be effectively deployed. For instance, I have to show the tools like Webots (robot simulation), KNIME (data analytics), Apache Kafka (real-time data streaming), and OpenRemote (IoT integration platform) and many more play a crucial role in building and managing Industry 5.0 systems. These tools enhance system capabilities by enabling simulation, data processing, real-time communication, and seamless device integration, thereby accelerating innovation in industrial environments.

Key Takeaways

  • Human–machine collaboration is central – Industry 5.0 focuses on combining human creativity with advanced technologies rather than full automation.

  • Integration of software and hardware – A unified platform connects AI, IoT, and robotics with physical devices like sensors and actuators.

  • Real-time data and intelligent decision-making – Continuous data flow enables faster, smarter, and more efficient operations.

  • Open-source flexibility and scalability – Systems can be customized, expanded, and improved through community-driven innovation.

  • Focus on sustainability and efficiency – The platform supports optimized processes, reduced costs, and environmentally conscious operations.

Reviews

An industry perspective of FOSS should be a good addition to the conference, and a lightning talk should be sufficient time to cover some of the projects listed. Robotics and IoT-related projects will hopefully attract students from non-CS branches.
