Making the Invisible Visible: Building an NVDA Add-on for Inclusive Digital Access

Proposal status is Review Pending
Session Description

Remote Element Marker is an open-source NVDA add-on that empowers visually impaired users to assign custom names and keyboard shortcuts to any unlabeled UI element in web browsers, desktop applications (limited), or during remote assistance sessions.

This lightning talk tells the story of building this accessibility tool as part of Vision-Aid's "Hack for Inclusion 2026" hackathon. We'll demonstrate how a team of developers created a solution that addresses real-world challenges: unlabeled buttons in web apps, complex remote support scenarios with sighted assistants, and the need for personalized workflow automation.

The talk emphasizes the accessibility-first design philosophy—every feature works entirely through keyboard navigation and speech feedback. We'll showcase how open-source collaboration and inclusive design principles can create tools that genuinely transform digital independence for visually impaired and low-vision users.

Key Takeaways
  1. Accessibility is a feature, not an afterthought — building with keyboard-only interaction from day one leads to better design

  1. Real-world problems deserve open-source solutions — remote assistance for VI users is a genuine gap that this add-on fills

  2. Screen reader extensibility unlocks empowerment — NVDA's Python-based architecture makes custom tooling accessible to developers

  3. Community-driven accessibility works — Vision-Aid's hackathon model brings users and developers together to solve real problems

  4. Small tools can have massive impact — a simple "mark and name" feature transforms how VI users navigate complex interfaces
