Migrating from Managed Services: How Docker and Nomad Set Our Infrastructure Free

Proposal status is Rejected
Session Description

Managing a growing production environment often leads to deep dependencies on complex managed services, making migrations difficult and vendor lock-in a reality. In this session, we will break down how we overhauled our infrastructure to reclaim control. By completely Dockerizing our services and shifting orchestration to Nomad, we successfully decoupled our architecture, resulting in a streamlined, highly manageable, and fully independent system.

Key Takeaways

  • Dynamic Routing & Zero Downtime: Discover the "magic" of Consul Templates combined with Nginx. Learn how to automatically update upstream configurations on the fly and instantly evict unhealthy containers to achieve true zero-downtime deployments.

  • Location-Agnostic Workloads: See how leveraging Consul for robust service discovery allows you to deploy Docker containers anywhere across your infrastructure, breaking the reliance on static IP routing and rigid network constraints.

  • Metrics-Driven Autoscaling: Dive into a fully automated scaling pipeline. We will break down how to seamlessly integrate Nomad Autoscaler with Prometheus metrics, Consul, and Nginx to scale infrastructure up and down based on real-time traffic demands.

  • Centralized Fleet Management: Learn how to overcome the operational overhead of a sprawling infrastructure by managing a massive, distributed fleet of Nomad clients seamlessly from a single, unified control plane.
