We are excited to announce a grant of ₹3,00,000 to Subtitle Studio, a modern, cross-platform subtitle editing application.

How it began

Msone is a voluntary fan-subtitling group dedicated to providing free Malayalam subtitles for international movies. Over time, the volunteers in the community frequently expressed the hardships they faced with existing subtitle workflows. Most of the available tools were restricted to desktop environments, and in many cases, exclusively limited to the Windows operating system. Most of the volunteer translators also used mobile apps for subtitle creation. So building a feature rich subtitle editor for mobile became a necessity.

The community needed a solution that wouldn't tie them to a specific device or OS. Understanding this problem, and after quite some feedback from the community, Mujeeb Rahman K, Anzil, and Samir set out to build a tool that would solve these issues.

About Subtitle Studio

Subtitle Studio is a fully free, cross-platform solution that works across all major mobile and PC operating systems. It supports both the creation of new subtitles and the translation of existing ones.

The Android version is available on the Google Play Store, the macOS and iOS versions are available on the Apple App Store, and the Windows and Linux versions can be downloaded directly.

The application brings powerful desktop-grade features to a cross-platform environment, including:

  1. Audio Waveform Visualization: A highly requested feature rarely found in mobile-based subtitle editors.
  2. Dual Subtitle Support
  3. Custom Dictionaries: Utilizing open data from Olam as the default.
  4. Video Loading and Subtitle Extraction
  5. Marking, Commenting, and Project Saving
  6. AI-Assisted Explanations

The Road Ahead

The development team is actively working on expanding the app's capabilities, with features like multi-device content syncing currently in the pipeline. We are proud to support Mujeeb, Anzil, Samir, and the broader Msone community with this grant as they continue to build accessible, cross-platform tools that empower voluntary contributors and translators.
