FOSS United supports the Open Source Pledge

FOSS United Foundation's endorsement of the Open Source Pledge

 · 2 min read

‎FOSS United is proud to announce our support for the Open Source Pledge - a commitment for member companies to pay Open Source maintainers for their work.

‎Why it matters?

‎Pretty much all technology companies today are built on Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). For far too long technological giants have reaped the fruits of commercial products built on top of FOSS while the maintainers of these core dependencies are often left unpaid.

‎As more and more Open Source Software gets adopted, we are seeing an increasing reliance on maintainers - who often work for negligible compensation and face severe burnout.

‎What is the Open Source Pledge?

‎The Open Source Pledge has a fairly simple message: Pay your share.

  1. ‎ Members should pay a minimum of 2000$ per developer at their company
  2. ‎ Members should publish an annual blog post talking about their contributions to the maintainers.
  3. ‎ All payments are to be made directly to maintainers

‎The Open Source Pledge aims to create a healthier, thriving and secure Open Source ecosystem by empowering the creators of the software on which our digital infrastructure thrives.

How can you help?

‎If you're an organisation that relies on Open Source Software, join the pledge. As an individual, share this with your manager. Encourage them to reflect on the company's usage of FOSS and how crucial it is to support the ecosystem.

‎You can read more about the pledge here.

‎P.S - If you are an Indian entity and the 2000$ per developer is too high a figure for you, please consider getting involved in the discussion around PPP on GitHub.
